2017 Summer Workshop

J-Net Summer Workshop 2017

Date: Saturday 1 July 2017
Place: Cardiff

We’re excited to announce the programme for the J-Net Summer Workshop on July 1 in Cardiff! We’ve looked for speakers and activities that reflect the results of our survey earlier this year, putting together a programme that we hope will be useful and interesting both for people starting out on their careers and those further along the professional path.

The reception desk will open at 9:45, and the programme will start at 10:15 with a short tour of the venue. The day will include:

  • A video message from Professor Takeshi Koike, the only university teacher of the Welsh language in Japan
  • Ben Jones, one of J-Net’s most experienced members, harnessing the network’s collective wisdom on “Ten things I wish I’d known when I first started work as an interpreter and translator
  • Chieko Kehoe, Maki Ikeda and Gwen Clayton giving a hands-on workshop using the texts for the J-Net Translation Competition
  • Reiko Millar, who runs a Japanese minshuku in the Welsh Borders where she serves kaiseki ryori made with her own miso; her talk will include a demonstration of miso-making
  • Tony Godfrey, Head of Business Development, Finance & Professional Services for the Welsh Government, giving an overview of the past, present and future of Japanese investment in Wales, including its prospects post-Brexit
  • Kaori Onoda, an interpreter with the Wales Interpretation &Translation Service, talking about her experience as a Japanese interpreter in Wales
  • Dan Lucas reporting on the ISO/TC 37 conference on terminology and translation

There will be a dinner in the evening starting at 6:30 (Bar 44 in Cardiff, cost probably around £28), and people arriving early on the Friday night may also want to gather informally for drinks.

The cost, excluding dinner, will be:

  • J-Net member early bird (by June 10) £30
  • Non-member early bird (by June 10) £35
  • J-Net member full cost (after June 10) £35
  • Non-member full cost (after June 10) £40

Please email Atsuko to register, indicating whether or not you intend to come to the dinner.

The venue is Yr Hen Lyfrgell (The Old Library), an iconic building in the middle of the city that’s recently been renovated into a brand-new Welsh cultural and language centre. Lunch will include local delicacies such as Welsh lamb sausages, pan-fried laverbread, and bara brith, and Welsh cakes will be served in coffee breaks.

Cardiff is manageable as a day trip from London, and the workshop will be timed to start so that it’s possible to arrive by train that morning. If you’d like to make a weekend of it, though, there’s plenty to see and do, and we will be arranging a local boat trip, a walk, and possibly other activities on the Sunday for those who are interested. For Doctor Who fans, this may also be your last chance to visit the Doctor Who Experience, as it’s scheduled to close this summer.

Whether or not you’re planning to come, if you’re on Facebook, please visit the Summer Workshop page (https://www.facebook.com/events/647701092088343/). If you could say that you’re going/interested and invite any friends you think might like to attend, that would be great.

We hope to see as many people there as possible!
